The Data Challenge - For Libraries

The research communities are developing new ways of communication which involve activities on all levels - from simple blogs over discussions in different social forum to exchange and reuse of primary data. This means that the traditional role of libraries as mediators of information needs to be redefined. The libraries are also pushed by the international players who are working to create a knowledge pool in the cloud implying fundamental changes also to the very traditional library functions of manage and provide access to information. Libraries have different responses to this challenge one of which is greater engagement with the research community around managing research output such as data. The European Research Library Organisation, LIBER, is addressing these issues through a working group, which are looking at organizational as well as technical issues. Areas addressed are partnerships, skill requirements, training, metadata for reuse, roles and responsibility. The talk will put the area of data management in context and will address potential roles for libraries.
