Scientific publications are part of a complex network of scholarly communication covering a wide variety of logical and technical forms of presentation, publishers, hosts, business models, usage models and publication stages. On the other hand, there is an increasing demand for assessment based on publications.

The talk gives an overview of current initiatives for collecting usage data and adding enhanced metrics for the assessment of scholarly impact.
