Information Seeking Behaviour of Academics
In a project sponsored by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), the University and Regional Library Münster evaluated the German Special Collections Programm from the users' perspective. One aspect of the project was to assess the present information behaviour of academics in Germany and possible future developments. In collaboration with the commercial firm infas (Institut für angewandte Sozialwissenschaft GmbH), that is well-known for its experience in public opinion polls, questionnaires were sent to 5.000 academics in the disciplines of applied economics, biology, English studies, history, and mechanical engineering. The survey asked for the methods, problems and wishes of users, differentiated as to information seeking and information delivery. There was a responds of 33 %.
Results show great differences between subjects, but also tendencies and problems common to all subjects. The answers allow to describe the present as well as the possible future role of libraries in information seeking and information delivery.
