Jay Jordan Global Networking of Information in the Scientific World - OCLC's Strategy for the Future
The OCLC cooperative now connects more than 45,000 libraries in 84
countries
and is actively engaged in the global networking of information. The
presentation discusses recent trends in the information environment,
OCLC's
evolving strategy to help libraries and other knowledge organizations
thrive
in this environment, and strategic partnerships in Europe. A new OCLC
market research report identifies trends in the information environment
based on interviews with 100 information professionals, a review of 250
articles and papers, and extensive global research. Trends explored
include
social, economic, technology, research and learning, and library. The
author reviews OCLC's ongoing strategy to extend the OCLC cooperative
and
transform its WorldCat database into a globally networked information
resource through new services and a new technological platform. The
presentation highlights strategic partnerships outside the U.S.
involving
OCLC PICA, which serves approximately 4,300 libraries and other cultural
organizations in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
